Sorry to just drop back in from out of nowhere, but I could not resist sharing this article about a hard edit on someone's writing and how important that is -- even at the highest levels, or, maybe especially at the highest levels.

  1. Thanks, John. I still think marking up one's own hard copy like this is useful. It's how I revise my own pieces.

    I've never had anything of mine attacked with quite this many editor's scribbles, but then arguably I've never written anything as important as a president's speech. Well, maybe if we go back a president or so ...

    Several years ago I did have a manuscript returned by a New York Times editor with 55 questions imbedded in a 1,500-word manuscript. Some of the questions confirmed what you've always heard about the classic provincialism of New Yorkers. The story was about the surprising trend of young high-tech geeks building or buying log homes in the Northwest. One of the editor's questions: "Are there a lot of trees in the Northwest?"
